About

Kidney Beam, a virtual rehabilitation app, is the first scientifically-proven kidney-specific physiotherapy and lifestyle management platform shown to improve patient quality of life and demonstrate significant cost savings for health providers.

The numbers of people with kidney disease and associated risk factors – diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity – are growing around the world. There is no cure for the disease, however better management of the condition and maintaining a more active lifestyle can slow down its progression.

Kidney Beam has been designed specifically to help people living with kidney disease and associated cardio-kidney-metabolic conditions to increase their physical activity and improve diet and lifestyle. The app features over 350 kidney-specific classes, a weekly live class schedule, several signature programmes designed for different disease stages, plus a comprehensive renal rehab intervention developed by clinicians at King’s College Hospital.

The app has been proven to drive a significant improvement in patient-reported quality-of-life among those given access to the 12-week digital kidney rehabilitation programme, in a landmark clinical trial published in the Lancet Digital Health. Patients were shown to benefit from improved mental health & physical function, better ability to self-manage their care, improved symptoms of fatigue, anxiety & depression, and reduced social isolation.

In addition to the patient benefits, the trial demonstrated significant cost efficiencies, with savings of £580 per patient across reduced hospital visits, out-patient attendances, primary and community care, social care contacts and medication spend.

Key Facts

Our clinical trial reported significant improvements in physical function, fatigue, mental health-related quality of life, social engagement, and patient self-management behaviour.

The average impact of the Kidney Beam 12 week programme is a reduction in cost of £580 per patient, with savings driven across a range of health system touchpoints:

  • £425 in out-patient attendances
  • £95 in-patient days
  • £32 in primary and community care
  • £19 in emergency attendances
  • £7 in social care contacts
  • £2 in medication spend

These savings represent a reduction of between 8-12% of the average annual cost of a patient with CKD. The platform offers a return on investment of 1:6 and has been found to be 88% cheaper than a face-to-face service.

Successes in UK/NHS

Kidney Beam has been rolled out in renal units across the UK, with the support of the regional kidney and cardiovascular networks. Over 25,000 classes have been delivered via the platform. Kidney Beam has been endorsed by all the major kidney health organisations, including Kidney Research UK, Kidney Care UK, the National Kidney Federation, the UK Kidney Association, the PKD Charity, Kidney Wales, and the Irish Kidney Association. Several clinical studies are also being carried out via the platform, including a study into the benefits of education and exercise for people with polycystic kidney disease, a project on digital inclusion aimed at those with low digital literacy, a prehabilitation study for patients preparing for transplant, a mental health pilot, and “Kidney Beam Kids”, the platform’s first research project aimed at children.
